Windy Day Sprinklers

Here's why you should water early in the morning! Windy days can cause wasted water (and grumpy neighbours if they get soaked!)

As you may have noticed from this video… windy days are not the best time to irrigate! Wind can wreak havoc on your sprinkler system, resulting in wasted water (and grumpy neighbours if they get soaked!).

The optimal time to run your irrigation system is early in the morning
, before the sun gets hot or the wind picks up. Watering before the heat of the day prevents your lawn from getting burnt by the sun, and watering when the weather is calm means your sprinklers will irrigate the areas they are supposed to (and not the road!).

Another advantage to watering in the morning is that it gives your lawn time to dry out throughout the day, and helps prevent the growth of fungus. Watering in the evening doesn’t allow your grass to dry out, and can allow for fungus to grow.

We typically schedule irrigation systems to come on between 4AM and 10AM, as per the Stage 1 CRD Water Conservation Bylaw. This may seem early, but it will help keep your lawn healthy and vibrant while using the least amount of water possible.
